5 Easy Steps to Spring Clean Your Big Green Egg
Is your Big Green Egg ready for Spring Grilling?
As cabin fever sets in, many of us think about cleaning out our garage and sprucing up the patio. As the sun shines brighter and the days get longer, after all the fun-filled winter months, hopefully your Big Green Egg will be heating up more often! Whether your grill hasn't seen much action over the winter months or you're quite the winter time Grillmaster... we want to give you a few spring cleaning tips to keep your Kamado in ship shape this season.
Step 1. Start by stirring the charcoal so that any ash will fall to the bottom of the Big Green Egg. If charcoal is damp or soggy, remove and discard it. If you have a Kick Ash Basket, (pictured below) this step will be much easier... just pick up the basket, give it a good shake, and remove the charcoal in the basket.
Step 2. You are now ready to do a high temp burn off. If your old charcoal is still dry and good you can use it, and if not just fill your Kamado up half way with fresh charcoal. Light your Egg quickly with a JJGeorge Grill Torch and get the temperature as hot as you can (700-1000 degrees will do the trick). Once it hits the peak temp, set a timer for an hour and let it go. Then shut it down and let it cool off. This makes a huge difference as it frees up all of the buildup that has accumulated in your grill and on your grate. Pro tip: if your daisy wheel is gunked up and hard to open you can place it on the grill grate during the burn and it will clean it too. This will sometimes discolor the daisy wheel, but no biggie... you can simply take it apart (1 screw) and spray it with some black grill spray paint and it will look as good as new.
Step 3. Once your Egg has cooled back down!!! it is time to break out the Shop Vac! Remove the remaining charcoal, your fire ring, and fire box (See diagram below). Scrape off any buildup that is still hanging around and vacuum thoroughly with your Shop Vac. We like to vacuum the fire box and ring as well while we have it out. Note: Do not use any cleaning supplies or chemicals on your Egg. It will soak into the ceramic and can alter the taste of your food when grilling. When finished, place the fire ring, fire box and fire grate back in the grill.
Step 4. Next make sure your gasket is ready for grilling season. Be sure you don’t have any cracks where you could lose heat. If you need to replace your gasket, it's an easy fix. You can order a replacement gasket HERE.
